How does this calculator round?
Every amount is rounded to the number of decimals you choose, using the usual rule: 5 and up rounds up. When removing IVA, the subtotal is the total divided by 1.16 (or 1.08) and the IVA is the difference, so they always add up exactly. With multiple items, IVA is calculated per line and then added up, just like in CFDI 4.0, where peso totals use two decimals; that's why you may see a few cents' difference versus applying the rate to the whole subtotal. Your invoicing system and your PAC (authorized e-invoice provider) have the final word.

Rates, formulas and withholdings at a glance
Formulas with examples
- IVA on a subtotal
IVA = base × 0.16$1,000 × 0.16 = $160.00 - Total with IVA
total = base × 1.16$1,000 × 1.16 = $1,160.00 - Subtotal from a total
base = total ÷ 1.16$1,160 ÷ 1.16 = $1,000.00 - IVA included in a total
IVA = total − total ÷ 1.16$1,160 − $1,000 = $160.00
In the border region, replace 0.16 with 0.08 and 1.16 with 1.08. A common mistake is removing IVA by multiplying the total by 0.16: on $1,160 that gives $185.60, not $160.
Most common withholdings
Example for $10,000 in fees: IVA $1,600.00, IVA withheld $1,066.67, ISR withheld $1,000.00. Total payable: $9,533.33. ISR is withheld on the subtotal, never on the IVA.
How much you pay the SAT, and when
IVA payable = charged − withheld − creditable
IVA is owed when you collect, not when you invoice. Each month you add up the IVA you collected, subtract what your clients withheld and the creditable IVA on the expenses you paid. If the result is positive, you pay it with your monthly return no later than the 17th of the following month; if it's negative, you have a credit balance to apply in later months or to claim as a refund.
Example: you collected $32,000 in IVA, clients withheld $4,266.67 and your expenses carried $9,500 in IVA. You pay $18,233.33. Use the “Monthly IVA” mode to run your own numbers.
Common mistakes
- Removing IVA by taking 16 % of the total. The IVA included is total minus total ÷ 1.16, not total × 0.16.
- Calculating ISR withheld on the total. It's calculated on the subtotal, before IVA.
- Confusing zero-rated with exempt. With the zero rate you can credit the IVA on your expenses; when exempt you can't.
- Using 8 % without meeting the requirements. The border incentive requires a notice to the SAT and operations in the region.
- Crediting IVA on unpaid invoices. Only IVA actually paid and backed by a CFDI can be credited.

IVA isn't yours: you collect it and pass it on
IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado) is Mexico's value-added tax, the equivalent of VAT or sales tax. It's an indirect tax: the end consumer pays it, but the businesses and people who sell collect it and pay it to the SAT, Mexico's tax authority. If you sell for $1,000 plus IVA, you collect $1,160; that $160 isn't income, it's the IVA you charged (IVA trasladado), which you report later. In return, you can subtract the IVA you paid on business purchases and expenses, called creditable IVA (IVA acreditable). The difference is what you pay each month.
The standard rate is 16 % across Mexico. In the municipalities of the northern and southern border regions a tax incentive lowers IVA to 8 %, but it isn't automatic: you have to file a notice with the SAT, have your address and operations in the region, and the benefit doesn't apply to real estate or intangibles. It also depends on decrees that have been extended over time, so confirm it's still in force for the period you're invoicing.
The zero rate and exemption look the same because the customer pays no IVA in either case, but they aren't. With the zero rate (unprocessed food, brand-name medicines, books, exports) you can still credit the IVA on your expenses and may end up with a credit balance. With exempt activities (residential rent, accredited school tuition, consultations with licensed doctors) you don't charge IVA, but you can't credit the IVA you pay either.
When an individual (persona física) bills professional fees or commercial rent to a company (persona moral), the company withholds two-thirds of the IVA (10.6667 % of the subtotal) and 10 % ISR (income tax) and pays them to the SAT itself. If the individual files under RESICO, Mexico's simplified trust regime, the ISR withholding is 1.25 %. For freight and trucking, 4 % of IVA is withheld. That's why the amount you receive is lower than the invoice total: the “With withholdings” mode tells you how much to invoice to receive the amount you need.
In CFDI 4.0, Mexico's electronic invoice, taxes are recorded per line item: each line has its own base, rate and amount, and peso totals on the invoice use two decimals. If your invoice has many line items, the total IVA can differ by a few cents from applying 16 % to the whole subtotal; the “Multiple items” mode calculates line by line so your numbers match your invoicing system. If you sell online, MonkeyFactura issues those invoices automatically from every order.
