What is custom software development, and when does it make sense?

Custom software is a system built around your company's exact processes, instead of bending your operation to fit a generic product. It makes sense when your team spends hours entering the same data into several spreadsheets, when no SaaS handles your business rules, or when per-seat licenses cost more than owning your own system. At Mercado Monkey a typical project ships in 6 to 14 weeks, with a working release every two weeks.

Almost every mid-size company we meet has the same symptom: a spreadsheet that grew into the central system, three people editing it at once and only one who knows how it works. It holds up until it doesn't: a row gets deleted, someone saves an old copy or the one person who understands it goes on vacation. Custom software development fixes that with a real database, user permissions, a change history and screens designed for the task each person does every day.

Mercado Monkey has built custom software from Torreón, Mexico since 2017: billing and collections systems, inventory and warehouse control, customer and distributor portals, quoting tools with pricing rules, KPI dashboards and lean ERPs that connect sales, purchasing and operations. One example is AguaMap, the customer registry, meter reading, cashier and billing system we designed for water utilities. We don't sell licenses or lock you in: the code and the database are in your name from day one.

We work in short phases. First we map the process with the people who actually do it (not just the director), then we ship a usable version within a few weeks and improve it with real use. If your team is outside Mexico, the process is the same over video calls: we serve companies in Monterrey, Mexico City, Houston, Toronto and Bogotá with the same bilingual team. And if your system also needs a mobile version or workflows that run on their own, we connect it to our mobile apps and automation services.

01Who it's for

Sound familiar?

  • Your operation runs on spreadsheets and WhatsApp

Orders, inventory or collections live in duplicated sheets and in chats nobody can search. You need one source of truth, with a history of who changed what.

  • No SaaS fits your business rules

You've tried two or three platforms and something is always missing: special rates, approvals by amount, tiered commissions or the report format your client asks for.

  • You pay for too many per-seat licenses

You have 30 or 60 people on an expensive program and use only part of it. Your own system pays for itself in a few years with what you stop spending on licenses.

  • You want to give clients or distributors access

A portal where they can check their account balance, download invoices, place orders or track progress without calling your office every time.

09FAQ

What people ask us

How much does custom software development cost?
It depends on four things: how many modules you need in the first release, how many user roles there are, which integrations it needs (invoicing, payments, WhatsApp) and whether data has to be migrated from another system. That's why we don't have a list price: after a 30-minute call we send a phased proposal with scope, timeline and a fixed price, so you know exactly what you get in each release.
How long does a custom software project take?
A typical internal system takes 6 to 14 weeks. The first two go to discovery and screen design; from there we deliver a working version every two weeks. A portal or a lean ERP covering several departments can go in phases: you start with the module that hurts most and add the rest while your team is already using it.
Do I own the code and the data?
Yes. From day one the repository and the database are in your company's name, and at handoff we deliver a technical manual and a user manual. We don't charge per-seat licenses or require you to stay with us. Most of our clients keep a maintenance plan because it's worth it, not because they're locked in.
Why build custom software instead of using a SaaS?
If a SaaS covers almost all of your process, use it: it's faster and cheaper. Custom software makes sense when your business rules are exactly what sets you apart, when you need to connect several systems that don't talk to each other, or when the accumulated cost of per-seat licenses exceeds what your own system would cost over two or three years.
Do you only build software for companies in Torreón?
No. Our office is in downtown Torreón, Mexico, and we meet in person with companies in Torreón, Gómez Palacio, Lerdo and Matamoros. We also develop remotely for clients in Monterrey, Mexico City, the United States, Canada and Latin America, with video meetings, a shared progress board and a team that works in English and Spanish.
What happens after the 90 days of support?
You can sign up for a monthly maintenance plan with hours for improvements, security updates, backups and monitoring, or request changes as projects when you need them. If you'd rather have your in-house team maintain it, we do a technical handover with code review sessions and architecture documentation.
Can the system connect to my invoicing, WhatsApp or accounting?
Yes. We integrate CFDI 4.0 e-invoicing (Mexico's electronic invoice) with your authorized provider, receipts and notifications through the WhatsApp Business API, payments with Stripe or Mercado Pago, and exports for your accounting software. When the other system has no API, we use n8n on our servers to move data on a schedule, with a log of every run.
