Buen Fin and Hot Sale: get your store ready before your competitors do

Mexico's big discount seasons pack sales into a few days and punish any failure: a site that goes down, inventory loaded wrong or a WhatsApp nobody answers. What you win is prepared weeks in advance.

Short answer

To prepare your store for Buen Fin or Hot Sale, start at least six to eight weeks ahead: set offers that protect your margin, secure inventory, enable interest-free installments and cash payments, test that your site can handle the traffic, build audiences and your email list before the event, and organize WhatsApp customer service and shipping with clear cutoff dates. After the event, measure results by channel and turn new buyers into repeat customers.

Key points
  • Buen Fin happens in November and includes brick-and-mortar stores; Hot Sale runs in late May or early June and is online only.
  • Calculate discounts with your real margin; selling a lot at a loss isn't success.
  • Ad costs rise during the season: warm up your audiences weeks in advance.
  • Test your store under real load and have a plan in case something fails.
  • PROFECO, Mexico's consumer protection agency, checks that reference prices are genuine.

Buen Fin and Hot Sale: how they're alike and how they differ

For readers outside Mexico: Buen Fin is the country's answer to Black Friday, and Hot Sale is its biggest online-only shopping event, similar in spirit to Cyber Monday or Prime Day.

Exact dates and requirements are announced every year; check the official websites well in advance. You don't need to register to run promotions on those dates, but registration gives you visibility on the event's portals and the backing of its brand, which many shoppers look for.

Keep in mind: November also brings Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which Mexican shoppers follow closely and use to buy from US stores. For many retailers, the real season runs from mid-November to early December.

Prep timeline: from eight weeks out to launch day

  1. Eight weeks out: set goals, participating products and discounts based on your margin. Confirm inventory with suppliers. Decide whether to register as an official participant.
  2. Six weeks out: review site speed and capacity, payment gateways, interest-free installments and cash payment methods. Design the event landing page.
  3. Four weeks out: produce creative (photos, videos, banners) and the copy for emails and WhatsApp. Launch list-building and audience warm-up campaigns.
  4. Two weeks out: load prices and scheduled promotions, test the checkout end to end, set shipping cutoff dates and train your customer service team.
  5. Event week: presale or early access for your list, reminders, daily monitoring of inventory, site and campaigns.
  6. Afterward: shipping follow-up, reviews, results analysis and a repeat-purchase campaign.

Offers that sell without wrecking your margin

The classic seasonal mistake is copying a competitor's discount without running the numbers. Before you choose a percentage, calculate your contribution margin per product: price minus cost, shipping, packaging, payment fees (which go up with interest-free installments) and average advertising per sale. With the ROAS calculator you'll know how much you can spend on ads per sale without losing money.

  • Tiered discounts by order total, which raise your average order value.
  • Bundles and kits: they pair an attractive product with others that carry a better margin.
  • Interest-free installments as the main hook on high-ticket items, sometimes more appealing than a discount.
  • A free gift with purchase instead of a straight markdown.
  • Free shipping above a certain order amount.
  • Early access for your email list and repeat customers.
Remember: PROFECO checks that the "before" price is real. Raising prices weeks ahead only to "mark them down" can bring fines and, worse, your customers' distrust. Keep a record of your price history.

Your store has to handle the traffic

Nothing hurts more than spending on ads and watching your site crash at ten o'clock on Friday night. Check these well ahead of time:

  • Hosting and capacity: Shopify scales on its own; on WooCommerce or custom stores, review your plan, caching and a content delivery network (CDN) with your provider. Cheap shared hosting is usually the first point of failure; compare options in shared hosting vs. VPS.
  • Mobile speed: compress images and remove plugins and scripts you don't use.
  • Load testing on custom stores to simulate many simultaneous visitors.
  • A change freeze: no plugin, theme or integration updates during event week.
  • A recent backup and a contingency plan: who responds, at what number, and how fast.
  • Tested payments: a real purchase by card, interest-free installments, cash and bank transfer. Read online payments in Mexico.

Ads: warm up before, harvest during

During the season, many brands compete for the same attention and the cost per thousand impressions on Meta and other platforms usually goes up. Brands that start advertising that same Friday pay more to reach cold audiences. The strategy that works best:

  1. Weeks before: content and reach or video ads to build audiences (who watched, who visited, who engaged), plus list-building with "Sign up for early access."
  2. During the event: the bulk of your budget goes to retargeting those audiences, your customer list, and branded and product searches.
  3. Clear creative: the offer, the deadline, payment methods and shipping, all in the first few seconds.

If this is your first season running ads, read our Meta Ads guide for beginners and tag everything with the UTM builder so you know which channel made the sale.

Email and WhatsApp: your most profitable channels in peak season

Your email list and WhatsApp contacts don't charge per impression. During the season they're the channels with the best return, as long as you have permission to message them.

  • Email: a teaser announcement, early access, event kickoff, a last-day reminder and a post-event follow-up. More details in email marketing for small businesses.
  • WhatsApp: an updated catalog with an event collection, quick replies covering payment methods, shipping and timelines, and labels by order status.
  • Response capacity: if you expect three times the usual messages, you need more people on shift or an assistant that handles the repetitive questions. A WhatsApp API account with multiple agents or an AI assistant helps you avoid losing sales by replying too late.

If you also sell in a physical store

Buen Fin isn't only online: in Torreón, Gómez Palacio and Lerdo, shopping centers and retail corridors fill up that weekend. If you have a storefront, digital also helps you fill it:

  • Google Business Profile with special weekend hours, posts featuring your deals and updated photos. Many people search "Buen Fin deals near me" on Maps.
  • Short-radius ads around your location, with your address, hours and parking.
  • QR codes in the window and at the counter that lead to your catalog or WhatsApp, for people who want to compare from their phone without standing in line.
  • Hold-for-pickup via WhatsApp: the customer reserves the product and comes in to pick it up; you shorten lines and lock in the sale.
  • Terminals and payment links with interest-free installments in store too; on high-ticket items, it's the main reason many people buy on those dates.
  • Data capture at checkout: email or WhatsApp with permission, so you can invite those shoppers back next season.

If you'd like to combine online campaigns and foot traffic to your store with in-person support, we offer digital marketing in Torreón for businesses across La Laguna.

Shipping, inventory and after-sales

  • Clear cutoff dates: "Orders placed by Monday ship Wednesday." Carriers get overwhelmed during the season.
  • Synchronized inventory across your online store, marketplace and physical store so you don't sell what you no longer have.
  • Packaging ready in advance; in La Laguna, consider your own local deliveries or in-store pickup for Torreón, Gómez Palacio and Lerdo.
  • Invoicing: many seasonal purchases require a CFDI (Mexico's electronic invoice); automate it so requests don't pile up.
  • An exchange and returns policy visible before purchase.

After the event: turn shoppers into customers

Buen Fin and Hot Sale bring in lots of new shoppers who came for the discount. The real business is getting them to come back without one. When it's over:

  1. Measure sales, margin and cost per sale by channel, using register data and not just platform numbers.
  2. Ask for reviews from people who have already received their order.
  3. Add new buyers to a welcome and repeat-purchase flow.
  4. Write down what went wrong (stock, site, customer service) so you can fix it next season.

A home goods store in Torreón that prepared for its first Buen Fin using this timeline didn't chase the biggest discount in town; it focused on bundles, interest-free installments and fast WhatsApp replies. Its biggest lesson was that the email list it built in October sold more than any ad that weekend.
